How do you determine whether a car radiator needs to be replaced?

2026-02-25

1. Obvious water leakage / seepage
There are water stains, scale, and dampness in the upper and lower chambers of the water tank, at the pipe connections, and around the core component.
There’s a long-term presence of pink/green/yellow liquid (antifreeze) on the ground.
The antifreeze keeps running low—no sooner do I top it up than it’s gone again.
→ Minor leaks can be repaired; for large-scale leaks, just replace the part.
2. Water temperature frequently exceeds the set limit and triggers an alarm.
The coolant temperature gauge is higher than normal during normal driving, and the effect is even more pronounced in traffic jams.
High speed / Turning on the air conditioner easily triggers a water temperature warning.
The heater isn't warm, and the engine power has dropped.
→ Most likely, the radiator is internally blocked, rendering its cooling efficiency useless.
3. The heat sink is extensively damaged and deformed.
The front-side heat sink fins are bent over, corroded, and have holes.
A large area was damaged by stones and accidents.
→ The wind can’t pass through, and the heat dissipation is completely compromised. I recommend replacing it.
4. Severe aging, plastic cracking
Upper and lower water chambers / Side plastic parts are turning pale, becoming brittle, and developing cracks.
There’s a slight leak when the car is warm, but no leaks when the car is cold.
→ It could leak completely at any time, so you must replace it in advance.
5. Severe internal blockage; cleaning is ineffective.
I haven’t changed the antifreeze in years, and the inside is full of scale and rust.
Even after cleaning, the water temperature remains high, and the warm air is weak.
→ A clogged radiator can’t be cleaned—your only option is to replace it.
6. Used for many years, accompanied by a major overhaul.
Over 8 years old / 100,000 km+
Preparing to replace the water pump, thermostat, and timing kit.
→ It’s recommended to replace them together to avoid having to redo the work due to leaks shortly after the repair is completed.
